Obituary For Merwin Beryl Rosen DDS

Merwin (Merv) B. Rosen DDS, of Bannockburn, IL, died peacefully on January 13, 2023, after a prolonged illness. Born in Cleveland, OH, on November 12th, 1935, he was the oldest of two children of the late Isadore Rosen, a pharmacist, and Dorothea M. Rosen. Merv is survived by his wife Tamarah, his sister Betsy G. Garfinkle (of Charlotte, NC) and three children: Adam (Dierdre) Rosen, Scott (Lisa) Rosen, and Kelly (Christopher) Lagrange, as well as six grandchildren (Elliot, Ari, Hannah, Gabrielle, Asher, and Rae) and of course, his yellow Labrador, Archer, and his two birds Max (Maxilimillions Pionus) and Ruby (Vosmaeri Eclectus). He was raised in University Heights, OH, excelling in both academics and music. Merv earned both his undergraduate and dental school degrees at Western Reserve University. He then finished his oral surgery training at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. Merv was an accomplished musician growing up, playing in the orchestra, marching and jazz bands in high school. During his summer breaks from college, he would play jazz in Wisconsin Dells. He settled in Waukegan, Illinois, where he built a very successful Oral Surgery practice and had a wonderful network of referring partners and lifelong friends. Merv loved his work. He was undoubtedly one of the best in his field in Chicagoland and would still be working to this day. Merv wasn’t defined by his work, though. He was a competitive race car driver, sailor (a Chicago to Mackinac Old Goat Society member), an avid skier and a private pilot. Merv fully embraced life, in which there was always a lesson to be learned. He was a life-long learner, always discovering how to do things himself and finding a way to use his hands whenever possible,. He always found some way to improve himself or his children or crew. He was a genuine soul, who had the closest of friends, whom he kept in contact with throughout his years. You always knew where you stood and what you meant to him, and he would go out of his way to make sure you knew you had his full attention. A celebration of Merv’s life will be held on January 28th, 2023, at the home of Adam & Dierdre Rosen, 517 N. Mayo Street, Crystal Beach, FL from the hours of 1PM to 5PM.     Dear Tami, Adam, Scott and Kelly, I am so sorry for the loss of your husband and father. My wish is that he and my father, Frank Isaacson, are sharing old racing and sailing stories again! My husband, Jim and I have been talking about getting over to see him since we went to an SCCA 75th Anniversary kick off party in February...little did we know that we had already missed our last visit. Life happens and we will forever remember and share memories of what an amazing man Merv was and how he enriched our family as well as all those he met. Hugs and prayers to all of you.     Tami I just can't stop crying. Just received your txt. He is my big brother that I never had. He was and remains my mentor and guide throughout my life past, present and future until we will share again. He set the bar forme. He was so generous. He invited me to join him in his practice. He granted me permission to use the logo that he had designed on his business stationary which I adopted and used on mine thinking snd reminding me that he was my big brother. I live you both so much. He is the ultimate renaissance man, my shared Spitit man. He will live by my side until I take my last breath. We trained at the same schools and defined our life in mileage not years. I share your tears of joy and respect and will honor him by continuing to learn, live and laugh together!     Merv, the consummate master of many things, will be sorely missed. He fought an unyielding fight against his medical challenges and challenged them to the end. Anyone who knew Merv understood that there was no task Merv wouldn't undertake. His favorite flute tune, 'My Romance', was greeted with great admiration whenever he performed it.     Tell me it isn't true! I just heard of Merv's passing last night and I want to send my heartfelt condolences to Tammy, Adam, Scott, Kelly and the rest of Merv's immediate family and to all the thousands of his colleagues, friends, patients, and racing buddies. I will recite Kaddish tonight for my old friend and fellow musician/dentist and listen for his sax solo from heaven.     Merv played with his musicians at Jerry's and my wedding in 1991. He was such a sweetheart of a man and Jerry felt like Merv was more a brother then friend. They loved racing and did the Dayton 12hr. Stint. He will be missed and I'm sure is with Jerry already talking old times. Patricia Schaub
